🟢 Software Was the Hero

Software used to be the answer. Problem? Buy an app. Spreadsheet for money. CRM for tracking humans. Form builder for collecting emails so Future You can become a tiny spam goblin. Yay.

The deal: humans had intent; software bridged it to outcome. Pay, click around, finish the thing. We accepted this because building software was hard. Hard was the fence.

🟢 The Fence Gets Shorter

Now coding is getting deskilled. Copilot, Cursor, and Claude Code are lowering the skill floor. People aren’t writing every line; they’re describing what they want and checking what appears. Phase one.

Phase two is the stomach-knot for app leaders. If a small team can make a custom internal tool in an afternoon, why pay per-seat fees for a generic project tracker forever? Mid-tier apps with copy-paste features and no special data are in the splash zone.

The survivors have harder-to-copy stuff: a network of people, data no one else has, or rules nobody wants to touch. Everyone else – form builders, dashboards, “lite” CRMs – looks sweaty.

🟢 The Weird Door Opens

Phase three gets weird. Agents like Operator, Perplexity Assistant, and Claude Computer Use aren’t only writing software. They’re doing the work software used to help with.

You don’t need a finance app if you can tell an agent, “track my spending and ping me when something looks off.” The app stops being the hero. It becomes plumbing.

Software answered, “How do I do this?” Agents ask, “Do I need the app?”
