Agentic AI is moving developers from builder to supervisor, and most SaaS teams aren’t ready for the promotion.
For years, the job was simple: write logic, ship features, patch 2am edge cases while questioning your life choices.
The developer used to hold the controller. Now agents browse, write, run tasks, ping APIs, and make multi-step calls without a human tapping “yes.”
The swarm keeps spawning:
→ Labs racing toward agent frameworks
→ SaaS tools adding agents to core work
→ Founders shipping products where the agent is the product
New failure modes are here. Agents don’t fail like features. They fail sideways: finishing the wrong task with full confidence, like a golden retriever bringing back a shoe instead of the ball. So proud. So unhelpful.
The blind spot sits at the system level. Old logs were built for clicks and errors, not tools making choices, rerouting, then calling other tools. A lot of teams are working with one eye covered. Cute plan.
“Done” is getting fuzzy. If an agent self-corrects and reroutes, when is the workflow finished? I don’t have a clean answer. Still open.
The teams getting traction aren’t flexing the fanciest agents. They’re building guardrails, tests, and human checkpoints before turning up autonomy. Boring? Yes. Helpful? Also yes.
This isn’t a feature upgrade. It’s an architecture rethink, and the window is smaller than it looks.
